SecuGen Hamster IV Biometric Scanner (HSDU04P)

The SecuGen Hamster IV is a USB optical fingerprint reader. It’s built for law enforcement, government, and enterprise identity verification. The Hamster IV captures fingerprint images at 508 DPI resolution and ships with a removable weighted stand for stable desktop use. It also meets FBI FIPS 201 (PIV) and Mobile ID FAP 10 image quality specifications. As a result, the Hamster IV fits deployments where certified capture devices are a regulatory requirement, not just a preference.

Sensor Technology and Capture Speed

The Hamster IV uses SecuGen’s patented SEIR (Surface Enhanced Irregular Reflection) optical sensor. This is the same core technology found across SecuGen’s fingerprint reader line. The sensor captures images at 258 x 336 pixels, across a platen size of 14.6mm x 17.9mm. It records 256 grayscale levels (8-bit) per image. Capture time ranges from 0.2 to 0.8 seconds per scan. That speed keeps enrollment and verification queues moving during high-volume use, such as staff clock-ins or applicant processing. Because the Hamster IV uses LED illumination rather than laser components, it also requires no warm-up period between scans.

Difficult-Finger and Environmental Adaptability

Smart Capture technology adjusts sensor brightness automatically. This lets the Hamster IV read fingerprints from dry, wet, aged, or scarred skin. The same adaptive brightness compensates for direct sunlight and other variable lighting conditions, which matters most in outdoor or field-based deployments. Auto-On adds a second layer of convenience: it detects finger placement automatically, so the sensor activates and captures without the operator triggering software manually first.

Durability and Standards Compliance

SecuGen builds the Hamster IV around a sensor resistant to scratches, impact, vibration, and electrostatic discharge. This supports long-term use at high-traffic enrollment stations. On the compliance side, the Hamster IV conforms to INCITS 378, ISO/IEC 19794-2, and ISO/IEC 19794-4 fingerprint format standards. It also supports NIST MINEX and WSQ compression. Beyond that, the device carries STQC certification and sits on the U.S. GSA schedule — both relevant for government procurement processes.

Compatibility and Developer Support

The Hamster IV works with Windows 7 through Windows 10, Windows Server 2008 R2 through 2016, Android 3.1 and later, and Linux. On Windows 10, it integrates directly with Windows Hello and the Windows Biometric Framework (WBF), with no separate driver installation needed. For custom applications, SecuGen provides free SDKs with sample code in C/C++, C#.NET, and Java. These SDKs also include a MINEX-certified template generator and matcher, which speeds up building PIV-compliant software around the Hamster IV.

Best Suited For

  • Law enforcement and civil FBI applications: FBI PIV, FIPS 201, and Mobile ID FAP 10 compliance make the Hamster IV suitable for programs where certified capture hardware is a legal requirement.
  • Government procurement and STQC-regulated projects: GSA schedule listing and STQC certification simplify approval in public-sector tenders.
  • High-volume enrollment stations: a 0.2 to 0.8 second capture time keeps throughput steady when scanning many users in sequence, such as during ID registration drives.
  • Outdoor or variable-lighting deployments: Smart Capture’s automatic brightness adjustment maintains image quality under direct sunlight, which benefits field enrollment teams working outside fixed offices.
  • Developers building custom biometric software: free SDKs with sample code in multiple languages reduce integration time for time-and-attendance or access-control platforms.
